A graduate of Ravensbourne, Rose Blair is a young fashion designer who, in her first collection, amazed the crowd with her girly and full-of-glitter aesthetic. She shows us that her and her brand both have only the brightest of futures ahead. We interviewed her to get to know her better.
PAM: Hi Rose! Before we get started, can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
ROSE: I graduated in June. My collection was shown at London’s Graduate Fashion Week, I did a jacket with plastic pockets containing My Little Pony figures. It went CRAZY on Tumblr – over 3000 ❤’s!
This lead to lots of cool people contacting me! My collection was even featured in Nylon magazine – Japan and shot by Arvida Byström!
PAM: How did you become a fashion designer?
ROSE: It was a bit of an accident really! I chose some random subjects to study after I finished high school. I didn’t really enjoy them. Then my parents took me on holiday to Las Vegas just before my exams. So when I got to the exams I realised I knew none of the answers! I then dropped out and had to find something to study for the following year, that’s when I chose fashion.
PAM: What was your first contact with fashion?
ROSE: I was always a very fashion conscious child! I used to get my grandmother to make me clothes – my favourite was leopard print dungarees! I wore them to every party with my Spice Girls T-shirt!
PAM: What was the first piece you ever designed?
ROSE: It was a really gross dress covered with lace and flowers, I dyed it with teabags. I keep it in the attic so no one can see it!
PAM: What inspires you?
ROSE: While I was working on my collection I had a tutor that was… let’s just say really mean and critical. He was going to give me a bad grade no matter what I did, so I decided to have fun with it. I was trying to plot a collection he would hate! Everything I chose was glittery and tacky. I kept the My Little Pony jacket a secret right until the show!
Apart from taking inspiration from other peoples opinions of what I do, I visited the Ukraine to do some research and took inspiration from the way the girls there dress, which I love but other people would probably call tacky.
PAM: What is your creative process, and what do you enjoy most about it?
ROSE: I enjoy the technical process of making a collection more than researching and sketching so I usually choose and develop fabrics. Then I start to work on shapes of garments which leads me onto final garments.
PAM: How can you describe your work?
ROSE: Tacky and girly. It has a childish feel with an adult edge. The effect of my clothes usually sends people back to memories of their childhood.
PAM: If you could go back in time, where and when would you go?
ROSE: I’m not sure that I would go back in time… I live for the moment and the moments that are yet to come!
If I had to go back in time within my own life I’d go to 2008/09 – my second year of Kensington and Chelsea College! My tutor was Stefan Vidler, he was great! I had some cool friends, everything was nice and chilled 🙂
PAM: What do you enjoy most about life?
ROSE: Probably friendship. I’ve got wonderful friends, I’ve met some amazing people and they’ve all enriched my life in some way!
PAM: If you could make 3 wishes, what would you wish for?
- Everything in my life to have Hello Kitty on!
- To be able to make a living running my own label.
- A trip to Japan as they have a wicked style!
PAM: What super power would you like to have?
ROSE: Flying so I could travel for free!
PAM: Favorite clothes to wear?
ROSE: High waisted vintage jeans and a top made of either mesh or airtex with a push up bra underneath! Also a pair of Jordan’s!
PAM: What do you always carry in your bag?
ROSE: Lip balm, lipstick, keys, headphones, iPhone, purse, a small Hello Kitty figurine, chewing gum, a mirror.
PAM: What are some of your future goals?
ROSE: I just want to successfully run my own label. I’d like to have a puppy and kitten that are best of friends!
