The following is a conversation between Aja and Essine, in which they discuss TEEN IDOLS!

Aja

I think Grimes is great because she’s Grimes……

She is so unique, and has such genuine opinions.

She expresses and absorbs what she likes from who she likes, and I really admire her for that

. Not to mention her music is like a bunch of fairies tickling your ear drums.

Essine

I feel like a criminal because I’ve barely listened to her music! But I’ve seen in her interviews and she is absolutely rad (PLUS HER STYLE IS LIKE THE MOST PERF OF THE PERF). So, I feel dumb, but who’s Jeff Mangum? (Obviously some really amazing cool dude).

Aja

Eek, yes you MUST listen to her entire discography ASAP, its very ethereal and ugh so lovely. I could spend hours upon hours watching live performance videos on youtube. Her style is definitely PERFFFFF. Jeff Mangum is the frontman Of Neutral Milk Hotel. In 1998 they released an iconic indie fuzz-folk album called “In The Aeroplane Over the sea”. The songs were inspired by Anne Frank, after Jeff Mangum read her diary and fell in love with her story. I feel like He’s a very mysterious and devoted man. His lyrics are by far the best collection of words I have ever heard.

Essine

Ah! I’ve heard of Neutral Milk Hotel, but once again I am a total LOSER and have never heard their music! That sounds so rad though, I’m definitely gonna give them a listen. Also, can I just say your Frida Kahlo collage is pretty much the coolest thing EVER? Frida is the absolute greatest.

Aja

Haha, I must warn you, once you start listening to Neutral Milk Hotel, you will most likely become obsessed (symptoms include writing lyrics all over your bedroom wall with sharpies, staying up late just to memorize every verse of every song, and crying because Jeff Mangum is not your BFF) Aww thanks, I LOVE Frida Kahlo, she’s such an inspiration. She took such a bitter situation and expressed it so purely and in such a raw form <3 As a student, I think it isn’t stressed enough in art to express what you are feeling visually, rather than what you see in reality.

Tell me all about Winona Ryder! I’ve only seen a few of the movies she’s been in, but I’ve loved all of them.

Essine

I AM OFFICIALLY WARNED, tehehe! And yes, I think so many people try to make her into this tragic figure but she was a survivor, a hero, and an incredible artist (plus she was super intelligent!).
I totally agree. I feel like Frida totally took her own feelings and made her art embody them.
EEEEK! Well, Winona is pretty much a gorgeous actor babe. She’s been in like, all my faves (Heathers, Mermaids, How to Make an American Quilt, Reality Bites) and she is just a total queen/style icon/GODDESS. She plays every character with such coolness and her gothy ’90s style is RAD. Plus her and Johnny Depp dated. And they were effin’ adorable.

Aja

Such a beautiful woman, inside and out, Frida was. I loved The Heathers! Winona’s style is superb in all the photos i see, and the photos of her and Johnny Depp make me melt from cuteness!

Essine

YES! Winona is like my top style icon is everything (and Heathers is the best movie ever in general). Plus her and Johnny Depp had such a deep emotional relationship. And their outfits together make me wanna sigh WITH LOVE (HAS THERE EVEN BEEN A BETTER DRESSED COUPLE OUT THERE? NO? I DON’T THINK SO).
So, I ACTUALLY KNOW WHO IAN CURTIS IS (yay!) and I’ve seen most of Control (the amazing movie about his life), but I’ve only heard a little bit of Joy Division. What are some of your fave things about him?

noname

Aja

Eeek, such a fashionable pair they were awawaw. AHHH IAN IAN IAN CURTISSS. His story makes me want to wither away into a sad puddle of tears. BUT he influenced music so much (although not credited enough) Joy Division is very iconic and brought a lot of elements into new wave that have influenced todays music (listen to the bassy-ness of The Xx in contrast to The Album “Unknown Pleasures, you’ll see what I mean). He had epilepsy, and the medication he took for his condition had the side effect of depression, which is one factor that influenced his suicide. I’ve been listening to Joy Division since I was about 7 or 8, since my dad would always play their music. Unknown Pleasures is such a nostalgic album to me. It reminds me of long drives home from San Francisco when I was younger and how secure I felt right where I was. Also he has a rad daughter named Natalie Curtis, who’s a neat photographer babe I recommend checking her work out! Now tell me about Vickie Miner, I haven’t heard of her/him before!

Essine

Eeep, that is so cool that it’s so nostalgic for you! I know about bits of his life and it’s so sad (I feel like sad is a super dumb word to use here) (Grossly upsetting is a more appropriate term), and I’ve definitely heard about his influence on music. That is totally rad you’ve been listening to them for so long (I feel the same nostalgia for all the bands my parents played!).
And I’ve heard of Natalie Curtis, I should definitely check her out!
EEEK EEEK EEEK VICKIE MINER! Okay, so Vickie is the (fictional) (SHE’S REAL IN MY HEART OKAY) best friend of Winona Ryder’s character Lelaina in the bestest movie ever, Reality Bites, and she is LITERALLY THE RADDEST PERSON EVER. She is obsessed with the ’70s and uses lunch boxes as bags and dances to “My Sharona” in a convenience store. We are talking ABSOLUTE HERO STATUS babe here! She wears red lipstick and Bettie Page bangs and the ~kewlest~ clothes ever, making her one of my top style icons EVER. She also has that all around cool, free spirited best friend feel and she is THE BEST. Everyone watch Reality Bites NOW. You will die from love.

Aja

Yes, I’m a lucky duck to have found that album at such a young age, and to have a rad dad with neat music taste. AAHHHHH I HAVENT SEEN REALITY BITES, BUT I SEE IT IN MY SUGGESTIONS ON NETFLIX ALL THE TIME AND ILL WATCH IT ASAP NOW I love her already I’m excited to see it now! Eeek OK Tracy Turnblad She’s such a great character Tell me more.

Essine

YAYAYAY YOU MUST WATCH IT
YES YES YES TRACY TURNBLAD! Tracy is legitimately my favorite person EVER (she is also not fictional in my heart). I saw Hairspray when I was about 8 (my uncle and mom LOVED IT and had seen it in the ’80s) and Tracy has always been my baby! She’s a kickass, anti-racist, body-posi queen who has some DAMN fine hair. One thing I absolutely love about her is she is the only fat character in any book or movie I’ve ever seen who loves herself, has an adorable boyfriend, RAD friends, AND is a sick dancer. That girl is my queen in everything, ever! (PLUS HER CLOTHES OMG) John Waters is my god of pretty much everything, and this is my favoritest one of his movies! HAIRSPRAY IS THE BEST 4EVER. I really don’t like the new musical version, though; I feel like they sucked the life out of Tracy and the movie in general. But, original Tracy is most deff a huge factor in who I am today and my always-forever-bestest fictional friend!

Aja

I love love love Hairspray, the characters are so eccentric and fABULOUS . I agree, the fact that she is curvy is great, but also the fact that her character is glamourous and a qtpai, despite the media saying that you could only ever be those things if you are a certain shape. She’s so strong and lovely. I love that she inspires you so much! Oh dear, we only have one more person to talk about, but yay IT’S STEVIE NICKS!

Essine

I KNOWWW, it is absolutely a perfect movie!
AND YES, Stevie! She is an absolute witchy, velvet dressed goddess! My uncle made a CD of Fleetwood Mac songs for a road trip, and it is totally my soundtrack to the summer. Stevie herself is such a princess dream babe, and “Edge of Seventeen” is literally the greatest song ever!

Aja

EEEk basically anything Stevie Nicks has ever worn, I’d like to wear. She has such an incredible personality. Ahh it has been so much fun chatting it up witchooo

Essine

I know! She is such a magical queen!
And yes, it’s been amazing talking about our lil rad bbies with you!
